Informative note about the Karavas Municipality

The town of Karavas was declared a Municipality on June 7, 1884. The population of the town during this period was 1.474 inhabitants. The inherent progressiveness of the Karavas people and their intense desire for progress, embellishment and development of their town was expressed in practice with important initiatives and significant projects from the first stages of the Karavas Municipality operation.

All the Municipal Councils during their term in office contributed to the significant progress and welfare of the community, leading the town of Karavas to be considered one of the most flourishing areas of Cyprus.

The Karavas Town Hall is at 27 Praxandros Avenue, where in 1974, apart from the municipal offices, there were a cinema and theatre, a municipal library, a municipal market, coffee shops and other services. The contribution of the Municipal Councils was remarkable before the invasion in organising cultural and other events, mainly aiming at promoting the town and upgrading and enriching the cultural life of the inhabitants. Likewise, the Municipal Councils contributed greatly to solving several problems concerning cleanliness, health, road works, irrigation and generally the embellishment and development of the town.

Since the 1974 invasion, the Karavas Municipal Council operates away from home and its basic aim is to promote the occupied town, strengthen ties between Karavas refugees and enhancing the struggle of Cypriot Hellenism for freedom and justice.

In cooperation with Karavas Refugee Association, the Municipal Council organised events dedicated to the youth, the elderly, Cypriots abroad and others, which maintain the memory of the occupied town.

The Mayor and members of the Municipal Council participate in enlightenment missions abroad to promote the national cause of Cyprus. In the context of strengthening the relations and enhancing the ties of Cypriot Hellenism with Greece, fraternity and cooperation protocols have been signed with the Leipsos Municipality in the Dodecanese, the 4th District of the Salonica Municipality and the Karavas Kythira community.

All actions and activities of the Karavas Municipality revolve around the national duty for the return of the refugees to the blessed land of Karavas, where the doleful soul of each persons from Karavas will find true peace...
